Insulin pumpers need to remember that infusing is risky business. Two high blood sugars in a row means that you have to change your infusion set or risk a hospitalization. If you don’t change your infusion set, you have to watch yourself because short-acting insulin means that you will wind up with a huge high blood sugar that won’t come down. Short-acting insulin starts working faster than our fabulous mainstay, Regular. NPH used to exist before Lantus. Lantus is long-acting insulin, while humalog starts working in 10 minutes. When your tubing works, your blood sugar comes down.
Humalog acts quickly though, and in the beginnings of treatment, this can cause low blood sugars. Lows are bad for you because you lose the ability to think coherently. Nobody should drive with a low, or for that matter, a high blood sugar. Sometimes this can mess up your cognition, or your ability to think. High blood sugar can cause most people depression or feeling uneasy and paranoid, like it does to me. Infusion is a risky thing to undertake but the kind of control you can get with it? Fabulous. I mean beyond your wildest dreams, so give it a shot.
