Frida Kahlo de Rivera

August 11, 2018

The Mexican Revolution influenced her work as she often said she was born on July 7th, 1910. Kahlo was a Mexican artist who painted many self-portraits, Frida’s work was full of autobiographical elements as well as fantasy. Kahlo was a surrealist or magical realist. Kahlo was the daughter of a German father and a Mexican mother. Polio disabled her as a child but a bus accident ended her desire to become a doctor. She married Diego Rivera in 1928. She was his third wife as a doctor told him he was “unfit for monogamy.” Both partners had affairs despite being married, but in an unconventional way. Kahlo used elements from pre-Columbian and Catholic mythology.

The bus accident left her unable to walk for three months, as well as confined to her bed in a corset. Her dream of becoming a doctor ended on the day she got into the bus accident, but it gave rise to a new dream of becoming an artist. When she married Diego Rivera in 1929, they both received attention from the press. Diego and Fria were both rivals in the art world, as well as two productive individuals. Frida Kahlo was one of those people who had a lust for life but Kahlo’s health declined after her 30s, as she died in 1954 at the age of 47.
